" No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave." ( Calvin Coolidge)
Hello Families,
Fourteen more school days? I look back on our school year and am grateful for the growth, safety, and blessings that we have here in our Lincolnwood community.
Many other schools have certainly not been as fortunate as we have. I do not take it for granted and I am thankful that I have the opportunity to teach your children
everyday.
I will no longer send home weekly writing assignments. Here at school, your children are publishing their white books, and that is a huge project which encompasses all
steps of the writing process. I feel that placing a homework writing assignmnent on top of that is too much. We continue to write everyday in the classroom in the form of the
white book projects or writing in response to reading.
Your children have completed unit 10 in Math. Today, we took a practice test. Because the exam assessed concepts that everyone has recently completed together in lessons,
I wanted to find out how each would perform while the concepts were fresh. Anyone who needs to retake the test due to misunderstanding of the problems will do so on Friday and will use
the practice test as study guide. If your child shows mastery on the practice test, then I will use his/her score to count as the assessment score. Unit 11 is a study of volume (base x height x width).
We will move through this unit quickly, in a matter of days, because the expectations for fourth graders is basically two-fold: They understand that volume takes up space inside of a three-dimensional object.
They can calculate volume by multiplying three measurements.
In reading, the class is finishing a Gordon Korman chapter book. In groups, they are demonstrating comprehension of the story by choosing a project to complete. These include making a game show based on the story,
writing a script and then acting, designing a timeline of the book's events, or creating a power point presentation about the story. The children brainstormed these activities and they chose the one they would complete.
This is the last week for Social Studies. Last week, the children "visited" and learned key facts about The Grand Canyon, Carlsbad Caverns, the U.S. Border with Mexico, the Alamo, Austin and Guthrie, Oklahoma. They also chose 3 of their favorite places we "visited." and wrote a letter about it. Ask your child to tell you about the 3 places they "visited."
We will finish the science unit on Magnetism and Electricity next week. The class has loved building circuits, making motors run, and examining the force of magnets. This week in Social studies, the children "visited" and learned key facts about The Grand Canyon, Carlsbad Caverns, the U.S. Border with Mexico, the Alamo, Austin and Guthrie, Oklahoma. On another note, next week I would like us to have a little party for Mrs. Austin. Thank you for contributing to our class gift for her. We bought items from The Teacher Peach and the students made a special white book for her. Each child
write and decorated a page. I am asking for everyone to bring in something to share and my idea is that we have a salad party. This is the first year that I have had more students choose the Caesar Salad option at lunch than ever. Many express how much they love salad, so I will send home a note with a list of veggies and dressings. Please check off what you can send with your child.
Please remember to check the school calendar for the end-of-year events.
Sincerely,
Karen Luciana
