Student Email Access on District-Issued Devices

Student Email Access on District-Issued Devices

As part of our ongoing efforts to create more focused, safe, and intentional digital learning environments, Technology Services and the Academics Department have recently reviewed student email access and use across the district. District-issued accounts are provided to students as learning tools to support and enhance instruction and this review was guided by feedback from our educators regarding the curricular benefits of student email to support learning needs.

Based on this feedback and our commitment to helping students engage more meaningfully with learning content while reducing digital distractions, we have made the decision to modify student email access, effective Friday, March 27.

Here’s what student email access will look like across grade levels:

  • PreK-2nd grade students will continue to not have access to district email.
  • 3rd and 4th grade students will no longer have access to district email. They will continue to communicate with educators through Google Classroom.
  • 5th and 6th grade students will only be able to send and receive emails from educators within our district.
  • 7th and 8th grade students will be allowed to send and receive emails from other 7th and 8th grade students and educators in our district.
  • General Domain Restriction: Please note that students across all grade levels cannot send or receive emails from email addresses outside of the District 65 domain, with the exception of a few approved community partners in very limited district-approved exceptions.

This shift is intended to support a safer and more intentional use of technology during the school day and at home. As a reminder, parents and guardians can continue to monitor and manage their child’s online activity on district devices using the Securly Home app. More information about getting started with Securly Home can be found here on our district website under the Support for Families section.

If you have questions about the way in which students use email, please reach out to your student's educator. We appreciate your partnership and support as we continue to refine how technology is used to empower student learning.
